Just four days after its premiere, Where the Mask Ends, starring Tian Xiwei and Yan An, has already made a significant impact online. The drama has become a trending topic due to its impressive accomplishments, sparking discussions about its plot and acting performances. Since October 16, the series has reportedly set three remarkable records.
To begin with, the drama has attracted 33 advertising brands, the highest for a female-led show on Youku in the last three years. It also became the fastest drama of 2026 to achieve a popularity score of 9,000 on the platform, reaching this milestone just 26 hours after its debut. Within approximately 48 hours, the series surpassed 10,000 popularity points, setting another record for the quickest time to reach that mark this year.
The main factor contributing to the drama’s success is the casting choice of Tian Xiwei as the female lead. Her stunning appearance has captivated viewers, living up to the “historical drama doll” moniker given by fans. Additionally, male lead Yan An has garnered attention for his striking visuals, reminding audiences of his status as the main visual of the K-pop group PENTAGON.
The storyline of Where the Mask Ends revolves around A Chou, a young woman of low status tasked with collecting and disposing of human waste. Often mistreated and bullied, A Chou’s life takes a drastic turn when she is chosen to stand in as a substitute bride due to her striking resemblance to the noblewoman Wei Rao. Married to Lu Zhuo, the heir of a duke’s mansion, she is seen as a means to bring him good fortune and aid in his recovery from illness.
However, complications arise when Lu Zhuo wakes up and discovers that his bride is an impostor. Suspicious of A Chou due to Wei Rao’s cruel reputation, he contemplates annulling the marriage. Meanwhile, the real Wei Rao schemes to reclaim her identity and marriage upon learning of Lu Zhuo’s recovery. A Chou must navigate the household’s intrigues, establish her influence, and win her husband’s affection to protect her newfound status.
