Jang Wonyoung’s supporters express anger at outfit selection: “She doesn’t have to show skin to dazzle”

Concerns were raised by Jang Wonyoung’s Chinese fandom on July 31 about the outfit she wore for the ceremonial first pitch at the 2025 Coupang Play Series event on July 30 at Suwon World Cup Stadium. They criticized the outfit, which consisted of a tight, revealing uniform-style ensemble, as “excessively exposing” and limiting her natural movement.

The fans highlighted Jang Wonyoung’s role as a role model for many young girls due to her confidence, self-love, and healthy image, despite being under 21 years old. They expressed anger over what her agency made her wear, stating that idol stage outfits should prioritize comfort and confidence over publicity at the expense of comfort.

The fans also emphasized that Jang Wonyoung does not need a “sexy” concept to shine and called her one of South Korea’s brightest female idols.

Criticism initially arose after IVE‘s appearance at the match, where members performed during halftime and took part in the first pitch. Their custom-tailored uniforms, featuring short hot pants and off-shoulder designs, sparked debates online about appropriateness and overexposure.

In response to the increasing criticism, IVE member Rei addressed the situation through a fan communication platform. She mentioned that the IVE uniforms were chosen based on individual preferences rather than being imposed.

IVE is gearing up for their comeback in late August, their first release in about seven months. The recent backlash has sparked discussions on agency responsibility, idol autonomy, and public scrutiny of female K-pop stars’ appearances as the group prepares for new promotions.
