The Ministry of Employment and Labor’s Central Regional Employment and Labor Office in Gangwon is investigating a complaint regarding fall-prevention measures for staff working on the set of I Live Alone.
Specifically, the investigation focuses on the adequacy of fall-prevention measures during a bungee jump from a high platform, including safety equipment for the participant and measures to prevent on-site staff from falling.
The complaint raised concerns about safety helmets, harnesses, proper installation of securing devices, condition of safety railings, fall-protection nets, and the employment status of the staff members.
Inspectors will be looking into whether the safety equipment was both available and properly utilized during the work.
The controversy arose after an episode of I Live Alone featuring a bungee jumping challenge, reaching a peak viewership of 6.8%.
Viewers expressed concerns about the lack of a visible fall-prevention device on the staff member assisting with the bungee jump, raising questions about safety measures.
The employment status of on-site personnel is also a key consideration under South Korea’s Occupational Safety and Health Act.
The Act mandates protective equipment, safety railings, and anchor devices for safety harnesses to ensure worker safety and imposes penalties for violations.
A recent series of safety inspections at leisure sports facilities in Gyeonggi Province uncovered various safety issues, prompting corrective actions.
