Reports from international entertainment outlets on September 30 (local time) revealed that Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos discussed the future of KPop Demon Hunters during Bloomberg’s Screentime event. He mentioned that a large-scale theatrical rollout can be expected for the sequel.

The sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is set to premiere in 2029, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning for the upcoming installment.

Netflix’s reported plan for a major global theatrical release of the sequel makes it stand out. This new distribution strategy aims to reach audiences in cinemas worldwide on a larger scale compared to the original film, which premiered primarily on the streaming platform.

Sarandos explained that for Netflix, theatrical releases must offer significant financial potential to justify any impact on streaming performance. Projects like The Chronicles of Narnia and KPop Demon Hunters are being considered for wide international theatrical distribution.

KPop Demon Hunters, released in June 2025, is an animated action-fantasy film following HUNTR/X, a K-pop girl group who secretly protect the world from supernatural threats while juggling their glamorous lives as music stars. The film gained immense popularity, surpassing 300 million views in its first 90 days and becoming Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time.

The film also showcased its box-office potential with special theatrical screenings. A sing-along version was released in August 2025 in various countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. The event saw over 1,300 sold-out screenings, demonstrating the franchise’s ability to attract audiences outside of streaming platforms.
