On December 31, 2018, in Xuyong County, Sichuan Province, Tan Songyun’s mother and two friends were walking when a car hit them from behind. The driver fled the scene, leaving the victims injured on the road. Tan’s mother suffered severe injuries and eventually passed away after 23 days of treatment in the hospital, never regaining consciousness.
After an investigation, the driver, Ma Minghong, was identified. What was more tragic was that Ma had ties to Tan Songyun’s family. He was a childhood acquaintance, and their families had known each other for years. However, the accident forever changed the dynamics of their relationship.
Ma Minghong turned himself in after two days and was sentenced to six years in prison for the offense. He was also ordered to compensate Tan Songyun’s family. Tan chose to donate the compensation to families of traffic accident victims.
