The study was conducted with a total of 283 participants across three countries: China, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom. Researchers presented participants with photos of male body types with BMIs ranging from 20.1 to 33.7, and asked them to rate their attractiveness.
The results showed that the average preferred BMI differed by country 23.4 in China, 23.0 in Lithuania, 26.6 in the UK. These figures generally fall within the normal to slightly overweight range.
The researchers explained “Body fat in men is closely linked to testosterone levels, which can serve as indirect indicators of a potential partner’s health and fertility. Despite cultural differences, women’s preferences for male body types did not vary significantly.”
In contrast, men’s preferences for female body types showed stronger evolutionary influences. According to the study, men tended to prefer slimmer and thinner bodies than those considered evolutionarily optimal for women.
